In my life I’ve had many crushes on teachers. I never acted on any of them, but it did motivate me to be a really really good student. I think it was my way of passing the time, coping with being bored at school, and processing how I felt about authority. Power dynamics are complex and confusing, especially to young minds. If you have a crush on a teacher, don’t do anything! Just listen to this song, live in the fantasy for four minutes, and let the feelings pass.
This song started as a cowrite with David Unlayao, a brilliant singer-songwriter that I met through NSAI. We wrote the chorus together before he moved to Nashville, then we fell out of touch and I kind of forgot about the song. I remembered it in lockdown and it turned into a joke on livestreams. I wanted to record it so I could try my hand at a rock production and high octane guitar solo. I’m not Nita Strauss yet, but it’s a good snapshot of what I’ve learned in lessons over the last 6 months.
Teach Me
I never met a man like you
The way you make those wingtip shoes and jacket look so cool
They never told me this school
I don’t know why I get so hot when you walk in the room
So I need you to teach me
You never had a girl like me
I might be young and dumb, but honey I ain’t that naïve
And I know where this might lead
Your wildest dreams and secret schemes could be my fantasy
So I need you to teach me
Teach me how to catch your eye from across the room
When you’re walking this way, teach me how to swoon
Can you teach me how to dance real slow
And leave in a cloud of smoke
Teach me how to stay up all night
And in the morning light
When you pull me close to kiss me goodbye
I’mma teach you to cry
You tell me I should keep it down
Who knows the trouble we might find with all this sneaking around
But I can’t help it if I’m loud
Your kisses are the only way to shut my stupid mouth
So I need you to teach me
Teach me how to catch your eye from across the room
When you’re walking this way, teach me how to swoon
Can you teach me how to dance real slow
And leave in a cloud of smoke
Teach me how to stay up all night
And in the morning light
When you pull me close to kiss me goodbye
I’mma teach you to cry
Every day I’m burning, yearning, learning something new
When I stand
When I stand
When I stand so close to you
Teach me how to catch your eye from across the room
When you’re walking this way, teach me how to swoon
Can you teach me how to dance real slow
And leave in a cloud of smoke
Teach me how to stay up all night
And in the morning light
When you pull me close to kiss me goodbye
I’mma teach you to cry
