It may seem weird for me to want to write a holiday love song in the heat of August. I just happened to have a lot of time to myself while traveling in Vienna for the Estill World Voice Symposium. I love getting to connect with my voice trainer friends to see what they’re teaching and researching, plus it’s a fantastic excuse to explore unique cities all over the world. I toured a few of Beethoven’s apartments, which have been turned into museums. I also learned that the first snow globe was invented in Vienna; gift shops carry them all year round. That reminded me of this song I started on day 92 of WeCreateNow. I picked it back up when I was having dinner near the canal on my last night, then finished it at the airport on my way home.
My music theory chops now allow me to write anywhere, imagining the melody and chord changes. Even though it’s possible, I must admit it’s not always ideal. Had I been at a keyboard, I would have noticed that my bridge melody was too far of a leap. I must have mentally changed key centers in between sections. There’s a good chance that when I tinker a bit more, I can find a middle ground that lifts a bit without being too disjoint or overshadowing the chords. Or maybe I’ll add an interlude that modulates. In the spirit of sharing my honest process here, this is the first work tape and the first melody I heard in my head. I have some ideas for other edits too. When I get around to it, I’ll come back and revive this blog, so you can see the song’s full evolution. KM
