I have such a rich history with this title. It’s an Edgewater song that my high school friends and I loved so much, we took it as the name of our band. It was a phase where we were all searching for identity, and with that came a lot of chaos and miscommunication, pinning hopes on misaligned visions. Looking back it was such a small saga, but at a very formative time. I keep dancing with scribbles from those days, writing and rewriting them time and time again.
My memory is so tinted by emotion, I can’t recall what really happened. Was I kicked out of the band? Was I ever even in it? Who knows. But I remember the blog post about the band name and why we chose it, written by our “leader” Devin. Was he the leader, or was it a symbolic role I assigned him?
“When everything you’ve dreamed of and fought for is gone by December, there’s still hope in the promise of a new year.”
It’s an idea that’s still close to my heart, twenty years later.
This is a very rough work tape that I recorded to remember the idea and share at my songwriter’s group. I sang the chorus melody a few different ways because I’m not yet sure how I want to sing it. It will be easier to decide when I’ve been able to rest a bit; extra shows for private parties this holiday season have been putting my voice through the ringer. For now I hope you read and listen and enjoy, and I’ll revisit this someday when I finally feel ready to make a holiday album. KM
Gone By December
So it’s a little colder
Each night’s a little longer
The sunlight dies as 5pm
You want to hide and hang your head
A list of things you should do
A wish that didn’t come true
Resolutions and regrets
But don’t give up yet
Time can fly so fast
Moments weren’t meant to last
Failures of the past can’t hold you back
When all your hope is gone by December
It’s not too late
There’s a new day every day
Have no fear
There’s a new year right here
Your sights set on a mountain
Too many doubts to count them
One small step is still a step
So don’t give up yet
Time can fly so fast
Moments weren’t meant to last
Failures of the past can’t hold you back
When all your hope is gone by December
It’s not too late
There’s a new day every day
Have no fear
There’s a new year right here
January is imaginary
It’s a line drawn in the snow
But if it helps you find the will to grow
Here goes
So it’s a little colder
Each night’s a little longer
The darkest part keeps you awake
Then the dawn breaks
Time can fly so fast
Moments weren’t meant to last
Failures of the past can’t hold you back
When all your hope is gone by December
It’s not too late
There’s a new day every day
Have no fear
There’s a new year right here
