I needed to write this song in little pieces as I processed the latter half of 2025; endings and beginnings, new dreams and plans. It’s a song about the grief of having loved and choosing to view it through a lens of kindness. It’s not easy, especially not now as I am half-packed and the evidence I rely on is tucked away in cardboard boxes. Maybe when I’m settled in Chicago I’ll come back and add the original scribbles.
You’re hearing the work tape, lazily sketched and stitched together. I haven’t had the time or heart to develop it further. I doubt I ever will. I didn’t intend to share this song at all, but I brought it to my NSAI meeting last month because nothing else was ready. We all cried together, which to me is a good sign. What’s this all for, if not to feel something? KM
And
Fell asleep in a rainstorm
Or were those tears on your pillow?
The sound was so soothing
You could finally close your eyes
And it helped you get through the night
But sometimes when you’re dreaming
You don’t wanna wake up
Even when the sun burns cruel
You’re looking for a meaning
I’m sorry there isn’t one
As the days dim away into blue
I know you shouldn’t hold me
So I remember what you told me
More than one thing can be true
It’s over
And I love you
Drinking coffee at twilight
‘Cause it’d be dumb to start smoking
The taste is as bitter
And it doesn’t set my lungs on fire
And it helps me get through the night
‘Cause sometimes when I’m dreaming
I don’t wanna wake up
Even when the bed turns cold
I’m searching for a meaning
And maybe there isn’t one
Just the memories still gilded in gold
I know you shouldn’t hold me
So I remember what you told me
More than one thing can be true
It’s over
And I love you
Love is more than a word
It’s an infinite source and a verb
It’s a choice, it’s absurd
It’s the best even when it hurts
And sometimes we’re grieving
We don’t want it to end
Even as the years drag by
But don’t stop believing
We’ll always be friends
And I’m glad that we gave it a try
I know you shouldn’t hold me
So I remember what you told me
More than one thing can be true
It’s over
And I love you
And I love you
