I had this idea a few years ago when my good friend told me her son was going to be Taurus. “Oh I love Taurus boys!” came my response. Patrick is a Taurus; so is my youngest brother and quite a few of my male friends. Taurus is my moon sign, so maybe that’s something of an explanation.

I did feel a little self-conscious framing this as a love song, but it was also very satisfying to draw on astrological stereotypes. I’ve dabbled in astrology since I was eight years old and it’s nice to have an outlet for all of the symbolism and trivia. I’m especially pleased with the line “he’s so down to earth that I’m in heaven.”

I had a chance to share this demo for feedback at a retreat in Nashville last week. NSAI invited local chapter coordinators to attend a full-day of songwriting and networking at their head office on Music Row. It was exciting and nerve-wracking to hear a thing I made in my living room played in the monitors at a beautifully treated studio. The song and my voice got a great response from the group, but it did also illuminate just how far I have ahead of me with getting mixes to translate in different listening environments. I can definitely do better; I know the proper steps I should be taking, but it’s easy to get lazy about following through. The retreat was a really wonderful experience that we hope to turn into an annual event. If that happens, it’ll be a great benchmark for me to check how my mixes progress. KM

Taurus Boy

His eyes are blue skies
Sees all the right signs and he hits the spots
He knows just what he wants
I might be rushing
But he’s got me crushing like a blush of spring
It’s more than just a fling

Everything is better since I met him
He’s so down to earth that I’m in heaven

God I love a Taurus boy
With his wristwatch and the matching shoes
He likes the finer things
Silk sheets, sleeping in till noon
Gotta love a Taurus boy
He’s persistent, gets me in the mood
Putting in work
Knowing my worth
Bringing me joy
My Taurus boy

Soft voice and strong mind
He takes his sweet time and we’re so aligned
He’s always on my side

Everything is better since I met him
He’s so down to earth that I’m in heaven

God I love a Taurus boy
With his wristwatch and the matching shoes
He likes the finer things
Silk sheets, sleeping in till noon
Gotta love a Taurus boy
He’s persistent, gets me in the mood
Putting in work
Knowing my worth
Bringing me joy
My Taurus boy
My Taurus boy

Most men are from Mars
But this one’s from Venus
I’ll take him in my arms
Connect the stars
So nothing will come between us

God I love a Taurus boy
With his wristwatch and the matching shoes
He likes the finer things
Silk sheets, sleeping in till noon
Gotta love a Taurus boy
He’s persistent, gets me in the mood
Putting in work
Knowing my worth
Bringing me joy
My Taurus boy
My Taurus boy
