I don’t exactly write songs slowly, but the moments that lead up to the writing are always a journey. “Another Road” was maybe 45 minutes of pen touching paper and 16 months of heartache as I pieced together the idea. The dull details of that story I’ll keep to myself for now, but I can show you some of the scribbles:
What will become of this song? I’m not yet sure. Everything about it is very country, from the melody to the imagery and the emotion. Maybe that means it will be best sung by another voice. I’m open to all sorts of possibilities.
Thanks to Daniel Blake at the Schoolhouse for co-producing, playing on, and mixing this beautiful demo. I’d also like to thank Mike Hickman at Electric Eye Recorders, who helped me get clear on the arrangement, and the Pittsburgh Songwriters Circle for providing the deadline I needed to actually finish the song. I also have to thank Patrick, who listened to me whine about parts and bemoan my inadequacies as a producer through four months of alternatingly slaving over and giving up on this song. I know I was insufferable; thank you for putting up with me. KM
Another Road
It’s like lightning, so blinding
Sometimes you just don’t see the storm until it’s past
Never imagined this white canvas, painted with promises
Could become a crooked mess so fast
But even silence can burn like a slap in the face
There’s nothing more we can say
So kill the lights and we’ll cut the show
Run back home to my radio
And sing a prayer for all the places we won’t go
Just take a breath and you’ll be fine
Keep on riding into the sunrise
This ain’t goodbye, love, no –
It’s hello to Another Road
Find the highway sun still shining
The desert sands still shifting while the wind blows baby blue
And even though my path’s unknown
I summon up the courage to smile at the view
But with every mile I see your face in the glass
I know there’s no going back
So kill the lights and we’ll cut the show
Run back home to my radio
And sing a prayer for all the places we won’t go
Just take a breath and close your eyes
Keep on riding into the sunrise
This ain’t goodbye love, no –
It’s hello to Another Road
So kill the lights and we’ll cut the show
Run back home to my radio
And sing a prayer for all the places we won’t go
Just take a breath and count to ten
Someday everything will make sense
This ain’t goodbye love, no –
It’s hello to Another Road
